As part of our Winter Lecture Series, we are delighted that Chris Rogers will be talking about stained glass on Saturday 3rd February 2024. His talk ‘Of Prophets, Priests and Saints’ will start at 11.30 am in the Community Hall, St Mary’s Rd, Market Lavington, SN10 4DG. Tea and coffee will be available from 11 am. We will aim to finish by 12.45 pm. Chris will explore the revival of stained glass in the 19th century. The destruction of stained glass during the convolutions of the 16th century Reformation and the English Civil War a century later was devastating and the art form was essentially lost for two hundred years. It was only with the Christian Revival, stimulated by the Tractarian or High Church movement, that the need for stained glass as an aid to worship was recognised. |
Spearheaded by Augustus Pugin and developed by a new breed of glass designers and makers, most notably Morris and Co., stained glass windows, good, bad and indifferent, were installed in churches old and new throughout the land. Chris will look at this development, concentrating on the work of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. If you would like to attend, please email jeremygroom@outlook.com. Tickets will not be issued and the fee of £20 will be collected at the door. We very much hope to see you there! |
