10 am: St John the Baptist, Mildenhall
“The best church in Wilts” – Betjeman; small village church of many periods: Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Early English, Perpendicular and Jacobean; its major charm is the complete Gothick furnishing of 1815-16.
11.15 am: St Katharine, Savernake, where we are offered coffee and tea.
Large estate church; built for the 2nd Marchioness of Ailesbury by T.H. Wyatt in 1861; stone spire; stone screens; much carving.
12.15 pm: St Mary the Virgin, Great Bedwyn
Large and cruciform of mainly 12th-13thc; transepts and crossing early 14thc; restored by T.H Wyatt in 1853-4; stained glass designed by Street and made by Hardman; monuments including one to Sir John Seymour, father of Jane Seymour.
1 pm Lunch: Please make your own arrangements. You are advised to book in advance or bring your own picnic. It will save time for us not to congregate at the obvious pubs in Great Bedwyn and Pewsey, but to drive to one of the local villages a little further afield. Below are a few suggestions:

2.15 pm/2.30 pm: St John the Baptist, Pewsey
Norman, 13-14thC; south chapel added by Street in 1861; Perpendicular west tower with fan vault inside; pulpit, lectern and stalls also by Street who restored chancel in 1861.
3.15 pm/3.30 pm: St Mary the Virgin, Alton Barnes
Anglo-Saxon in origin – shallow pilasters in the nave; brick chancel of 1748; good 18thc panelling; three decker pulpit; Royal Arms of James I; recent glass by Laurence and Simon Whistler.
