Dear Friend of Wiltshire Churches
I am pleased to give you details of our first event of the year which will be a revival of our Winter Lecture Series, sadly missing last year. This will take place at Market Lavington Community Hall, St Mary’s Road, SN10 4DG on Saturday 5 March at 3.00pm. Doors open 2.45pm. There is good parking.
The subject is Salisbury Cathedral: James Wyatt the Destroyer?
A new bishop, Shute Barrington, and an eminent architect, James Wyatt, undertook ‘Improvements’ to Salisbury Cathedral at the end of the 18th century. Were they really warranted? They were certainly controversial, even at the time, but, for good or ill, they have provided us with the defining image of this iconic building. Perhaps Wyatt might not deserve the name ‘Wyatt the Destroyer’. That might be for you to decide.
We are very lucky to have Christopher Rogers, long time committee member and inspiring lecturer on the Arts to talk to us. I have no doubt that we will all be well entertained.
The fee will be £20 inclusive of refreshments, payable at the door. Tickets will not be issued but I would be grateful if you would let me know if you intend to come. Guests are welcome.
Best wishes,
Martin Knight
