TOUR OF CHURCHES IN THE CHALKE VALLEY
This is our first tour of the year and Brian Woodruffe, the author of A Guide to the Parish Churches of Wiltshire, has kindly agreed to show us several churches in this beautiful valley. The planned itinerary is as follows:
10.15-10.30 am. Meet at St Andrews, Nunton. SP5 4HP.
1854-5 by T.H. Wyatt; some earlier work including Lady Chapel; monument by Westmacott to John Batt obit 1831; Christopher Webb east window of 1937.
11.30am. St Michael & All Angels, Coombe Bissett. SP5 4LR.
Norman south door and south arcade; Perpendicular north arcade and tower; nave and chancel 12th-13thc, the latter with a strident window of 1901; Norman font; Victorian west front.
12.30pm. Lunch at the Queen’s Head, Broad Chalke.

2.00pm All Saints, Broad Chalke. SP5 5DW.
Cruciform; mainly 13th-14thc with Perpendicular windows; central tower completed in the 1530s; nave roof with angel brackets; Perpendicular font; monument in churchyard to Christopher Wood, the painter obit 1930, who lived at Reddish House, subsequently the home of Cecil Beaton, who is also buried in the churchyard; John Aubrey described the bells as “one of the tuneablest rings in Wiltshire”.
3.00pm St John the Baptist, Bishopstone. SP5 4AS.
Grade 1. Set above the meadows of the River Ebble; a big cruciform church mainly Decorated, with some Norman work; reticulated window tracery; elaborate interior; south transept and chancel are rib-vaulted; much re-assembled Spanish woodwork including pulpit; sedilia; Pugin Gothic tomb chest and canopy for the Rev George Augustus Montgomery obit 1842, crushed by a fall of masonry at East Grafton church; Te Deum east window of the early 1900s as a memorial to the Earl and Countess of Pembroke and George Montgomery; the Rev Francis Lear was vicar here 1850-1914.
